PUMA Online Squad 3 May [Review]
First PUMA Squad Session on Zoom
By Mr D Lammin, 6th Degree and PUMA Head Coach
The first online PUMA Squad session took place this morning (Sunday 3rd May) and was attended by around 50 PUMA students from around the country. It was a new experience for the students as well as the coaches and whilst there are obviously limitations the session was really well received by those who attended it. Life as we know it has pretty much stopped for most of us over recent weeks and we felt that it is important to try and get squad sessions up and running online as we know that many students have been missing them.
The session lasted just over 2 hours and started with 40 minutes of technical work with Mr. Swain. The primary focus was to cover technical basics that students can easily work on even when space is limited and this section finished with a couple of patterns performed a little differently to usual. After a quick drink break Mr. Whitlock conducted the sparring section looking in particular at footwork and hand techniques (with a few kicks thrown in to keep things varied). Taekwon-Do in particular is renowned for its kicking and other areas are often overlooked by students. After another short break it was time for a 20 minute HIIT session with Mr. Lammin. Again, all of the exercises involved were designed to be manageable with limited space and judging by the red faces at the end I think it’s fair to say that everyone really worked hard and appreciated the final section of the session – Mr. Pixton ran students through a wide variety of stretches to help people cool down whilst working on their flexibility and mobility.
It was great to so many people training and working hard, in particular a number of new faces. We have already had some great feedback on the session and are looking at holding them every 3 to 4 weeks going forwards until we get back to normality. We hope that even more people will take the opportunity to attend the next session and would encourage all PUMA Taekwon-Do and Kickboxing students to do so. This is a great opportunity for anyone who hasn’t attended a squad session before to give it a go from the comfort of your own home and without the need to travel… What have you got to lose?
The next session will be on Sunday 24th May at 10am – details on joining the zoom meeting will be sent via instructors and the squad mailing list. We hope to see you all there and in the meantime if you have any questions then just drop me an email at email@example.com.
I would like to finish by thanking everyone who attended for working so hard and also the coaching team who gave up their time to run the session (as well as the planning in the build up).
